8680 Navajo Road Restaurant Profile Around Los Angeles, Peruvian restaurants, like the El Pollo Inka chain, are part of the ethnic-restaurant melting pot. But they're still a rarity in San Diego. Macchupicchu in Ocean Beach has closed, and a few other places were short-lived. Since September 1999, Ana Maria's Peruvian Restaurant has been serving food in a little shopping center. Ana Maria Montes de Oca and her husband Jose created an attractive space, decorated with South American tapestries, watercolors and pottery, a thatch of palms near the entrance and tables draped in red and white cloths. Music, ranging from smoothly lilting Jobim to Afro-Peruvian rhythms, plays discreetly in the background. The servers are knowledgeable and enthusiastic, since most often they're co-owner Jose Montes de Oca or daughters Ana or Sofia. The restaurant does a quiet lunch trade, serving zesty steak or pork loin sandwiches, but most of the activity is at night. Try the lomo saltado, a soy-sauced saute of lean beef, tomatoes, onions and french-fried potatoes served over rice, and the goat stew, seco de cabrito, in a tasty brown gravy flavored with cilantro, garlic and a homemade corn liquor. Wash it all down with chica morada, a sweet punch made from blue corn spiked with cinnamon and cloves; Inca Kola, a fruity cream soda; a glass of wine or a selection of imported Peruvian beers ranging from light malty Cristal to a dark sweet Cusqueqa. Desserts include an especially nice flan that's pleasantly firm and seductively scented with brandy, a warm bread pudding in a homemade fig syrup, and on weekends heavenly squash doughnuts dipped in fig syrup.
